 Semester One

 

 

Course Description:  Acting Techniques fills the sophomore requirement in the Arts porgram.  It is sequential with the Theater Humanities or Ating One course and will take the concepts first studies there and apply them to more concentrated performance work.  Emphasis in this course is twofold:  To understand the creative process of acting both from a physical and analytical approach.

 

Course Objectives 

                To appreciate Theater as an Art form by

                                1.  taking part in classroom projects and performances.

                                2.  developing skills for rigor, commitment and discipline.

                To understand and appreciate the Creative Process by

                                1.  exploring and developing your own natural talents.

                                2.  evaluating, reflecting upon and refining your work.

                                3.  evaluating and reflecting upon the work of others.

                                4.  learing to give and accept constructive criticism.

                To form a process for Acting and performance by

                                1.  learning and applying both technique and emotional connection.

                                2.  learning and using a common vocabulary.

                                3.  gaining self-confidence through a mastery of skills.

                                4.  appreciating and incorporating progressive risk taking.

                                5.  demonstrating responsibility for group  and ensemble efforts.

 

Introduction - The Acting Process (One Week)

Objectives:  To reconnect with the language learned and applied in previous courses.

                        To begin to connect these concepts from an actor's point of view.

                        To gain self-confidence and security in the classroom environment.

Projects:  Three Word Improv

Journal Assignments:  Monster Hall of Fame

 

Unit One - Given Circumstances (Three Weeks)

Objectives:  To comprehend the difference between Given circumstances and actor choices.

                        To immediatley identify the given circumstances within a scene.

                        To utilize given circumstances in character development.

                        To make choices based on given circumstances.

Projects:  Written givens on assigned scene.

                    Written choices for emotional stability and physicality based on givens.

Journal Assignments:  Three letters to Meanies

                                                Three letters to Nicies

                                                Imagianry Lives

 

Unit Two - Objectives, Obstacles and Tactics (Three Weeks)

Objectives:  To discern the difference between Ojectives and Tactics.

                        To realize how Obstacles affect the playing of Objectives.

                         To enables students to put Objectives into written form.

Projects:  Character Ananlysis in written format.

Journal Assignements:  The Pie

                                                Five Childhood traits

                                                List five habits

Unit Three - Constuctive Criticism (Two Weeks)

Objectives:  To establish a criteria fro criticizing classroom work.

                       To discern between objective and subjective criticism.

                       To domonstrate ability to incorporate both types of criticism.

                       To present classroom work and establish a way to assess it.

Projects:  Presentation of Scene

                    Written Critique of scenes

Journal Assignments:  Five Friends

                                          Five New Friends

 

Unit Four - Subtext (Two Weeks)

Objectives:  -To introduce Inner Monologue.

                         To apply subtext tp characters.

                          To comprehend how sbutext affects text.

Projects:  Subtext in Scene

Journal Assignments:  Not Allowed

                                          The Ideal Date

 

Unit Five - Action (Two Weeks)

Objectives:  To focus on the scene and not an audience.

                        To put you in the world of the play.

                     To guide you, as the actor, to the threshold of the subconscious

Projects:  Action in the Scene

                    Final presentation of Scene

Journal Assignments:  What do you Fear?

                                          Bad Habits

 

Unit Six - Stage Combat (Two weeks)

Objectives:  To learn and safely execute the techniques of Stage Combat

                       To create and perfrom stage combat with believability

Projects:  Presentation of combat scene

Journal Assignments:  None
